Read the text below and answer questions number 11 and number 12. The North American steel industry annually recycles millions of tons of steel scrap from recycled cans, automobiles, appliances, construction materials and other steel products. This scrap is remelted to produce new steel. In fact, the industry's overall recycling rate is nearly 68%. There are two processes for making steel. The Basic Oxygen Furnace process, which is used to produce the steel needed for packaging, car bodies, appliances and steel framing, that uses a minimum of 25% recycled steel. The Electric Arc Furnace process, which is used to produce steel shapes such as railroad ties and bridge spans, that uses virtually 100% recycled steel. And, since all new steel products contain recycled steel, when you buy steel you help to close the recycling loop by buying recycled. Many communities operate recycling programs which include steel cans. Several also provide options to recycle appliances. And while consumers are not actively involved, virtually every car taken off the road is recycled. More than 200 million Americans have convenient access to steel can recycling through curbside, drop-off and buyback programs, as well as through magnetic separation at resource recovery facilities. Steel cans, including food, paint and aerosol cans, were recycled at a rate of 58% in 2001. The industry remelted more than 18 billion steel cans into new products. In 2001, nearly 2 million tons of steel were recovered from recycled appliances, at a rate of 85%. There are nearly 12,000 appliance recycling locations throughout the United States. Comparing the number of automobiles taken off the road in 2001 to the number of new cars produced shows a recycling rate of 101% for automobiles in 2001. Builders across the United States are constructing all types of steel framed homes: multi-family developments, retirement homes and single-family residences. There are many benefits to
