Skimming or skim-reading means reading quickly through a text to get a general idea of what it is about. This type of reading is also called reading for gist.
Scanning means reading a text slowly and carefully to find a specific piece or pieces of information. This kind of reading is also called reading for specific information.
Detailed reading means reading a text in order to extract the maximum detail from it. In other words,you read a text getting the meaning out of every word.
Reading aloud refers to reading a prepared speech or lecture, or reading a story aloud, or an extract from the newspaper.
Extensive reading refers to reading longer texts, primarily for pleasure or leisure, or in order to increase vocabulary, or to develop a reading habit.
